Today we’re checking out the Hillcrest neighborhood in San Diego, California!

With tons of great places to eat, drink, and shop, an inclusive and diverse community, with easy access to downtown and the airport, Hillcrest is a great neighborhood! Beautifully maintained homes and neighborhoods, good schools, and diverse housing options, this could be your next spot!

Hillcrest Vibes

Home to around 35,000 residents, Hillcrest is known for its culture, diversity, tolerance, and inclusion. The center of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community, it’s buzzing with gay bars and is home to San Diego’s massive annual Pride parade. You’ll find a lot of global foods, bars, restaurants, and independent spots all along University.

Beautiful homes and manicured streets, they do a great job of maintaining this neighborhood. A walkable and bike-able neighborhood, it was rated the #1 best place for young professionals in San Diego* and is located less than 10 minutes from both downtown and the airport.

Served by the San Diego Unified School District, which is rated an A-, most of the schools serving Hillcrest are generally quite good. Most of the schools are rated in the A’s or B’s*.

Home Price Statistics With a median sale price of around $663k, that number is skewed slightly low by including condos/townhomes in that median. Currently on the market for single family homes, the lowest listing is around $890k and up to the highest at around $1.6 million. In terms of condos/townhomes currently on the market, on the low end you’ll be looking at around $400k and upwards of $1.5 million on the higher end.


Pros + Cons

Pros:

  • Tons of great and hip bars, restaurants, shops, etc

  • History, culture, diversity, inclusion - epicenter of the LGBTQ+ community in San Diego

  • Good schools

  • Beautifully maintained and manicured homes and neighborhoods

  • Walkable and bike-able

Cons:

  • Parking can be a real bummer

  • Lack of parks/green spaces in Hillcrest proper

  • Expensive overall - but more specifically single-family housing is expensive

  • A little nitpicky, but there is a bit of airplane noise - not bad, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention

  • Commercial areas are super busy
